Perfume-Free Creams: Who Needs Them and Why

Perfume-free creams are moisturisers made without any added fragrance. They suit people with sensitive or easily irritated skin, anyone who reacts to scents, people who work in scent-free places like hospitals, and Muslims in ihram during Umrah or Hajj. If you have ever had itchy, red skin after trying a new lotion, a perfume-free cream is the simplest place to start.

Fragrance makes a cream pleasant to use, and for many people it causes no trouble at all. But it adds nothing to how well a cream moisturises. If your skin is fussy, or your situation calls for no scent, leaving it out costs you nothing.

What does perfume-free actually mean?

A perfume-free cream has no fragrance added to it. On the ingredients list, you will not see the words parfum, fragrance or aroma.

This is not quite the same as unscented. Some products labelled unscented contain a small amount of masking fragrance, added to cover the natural smell of the other ingredients. So the product smells of nothing, but it still contains fragrance. Perfume-free or fragrance-free is the clearer promise.

It also helps to know that some plant oils and extracts have a scent of their own. Lavender, citrus and rose oils, for example, are often added to natural products for their smell. If you are avoiding fragrance for skin reasons, these can matter too. On European-made products you may also see names like limonene, linalool or citronellol, which are fragrance compounds that must be listed.

Who needs perfume-free creams?

People with sensitive skin are the biggest group. Fragrance is one of the most common reasons people react to skin products. A reaction might be mild, like stinging or a tight, itchy feeling, or it might be a red, bumpy rash where the cream went on. Once someone becomes allergic to a fragrance ingredient, the reaction tends to come back each time they meet it.

People with very dry, cracked or chapped skin often do better without fragrance as well. When the skin’s surface is broken or rough, ingredients can get in more easily and are more likely to sting. A gentle, rich cream with no perfume is kinder to hands and heels in that state.

Then there are people who need no scent for practical reasons. Nurses, doctors and carers often work in wards with scent-free rules, because strong smells can bother patients who are ill or recovering. Food handlers and chefs may not want a scent near the food. Some people get headaches from strong smells, and many expecting mothers find scents hard to bear in early pregnancy. Others just want to wear their own perfume or attar without a body cream competing with it.

Can I use a perfume-free cream in ihram?

For Muslims performing Umrah or Hajj, perfume is not allowed once you have entered the state of ihram. Many people still need something for chafing, cracked heels or dry hands during long days of walking in the heat of Makkah.

Scholars generally allow unscented creams used as a remedy, for example to ease chafing. This is discussed in IslamQA answer 212827 and in Dar al-Ifta Egypt fatwa 14540, and the Saudi Ministry of Hajj ihram guide covers what is and is not allowed. Please confirm with your own scholar or madhab, and always check the label before you pack.

The GLYSOLID Body Lotion Musk and Body Lotion Aloe Vera are fragranced products, so they are not the better choice while in ihram. The perfume-free Glycerin Skin Cream is the one to pack. We cover this in more detail in our guide to Umrah and Hajj skin care and chafing in ihram.

Which GLYSOLID creams are perfume-free?

The glycerin in these creams draws water into the outer layer of your skin and helps hold it there, while the allantoin helps soothe and smooth rough patches. If you are curious about how these two work, read what is allantoin.

How do I switch to a perfume-free routine?

Start with the products that stay on your skin the longest. A body cream or hand cream sits on your skin for hours, so it matters more than a soap that you rinse off in a few seconds.

First, check your current creams and lotions for parfum or fragrance on the label. Then swap the leave-on products for perfume-free ones. After that, look at your soap, body wash and washing powder, which can also carry fragrance. Gentle, fragrance-free soaps are easy to find at most South African pharmacies.

Give your skin a few weeks to settle. If you had been reacting to a scent, things should feel calmer once you have removed it. If your skin still itches, stays red or keeps breaking out in a rash, it is time to see your pharmacist, clinic sister or doctor. They can help work out what is causing it, and a doctor can arrange allergy patch testing if needed.

Common questions

Are perfume-free creams better for everyone?

Not necessarily. Many people use scented creams for years without any trouble, and enjoy them. Perfume-free creams are best for people with sensitive skin, people who react to fragrance, and anyone who needs to avoid scent for work, health or religious reasons.

Is unscented the same as perfume-free?

Not always. Some unscented products contain a little masking fragrance to hide the smell of other ingredients. Check the ingredients list for parfum or fragrance to be sure.

Does a perfume-free cream smell of anything?

It may have a faint smell from its own ingredients, but nothing that has been added to make it smell nice. Most people describe it as clean or neutral.

Which GLYSOLID cream is best for Umrah and Hajj?

The perfume-free Glycerin Skin Cream is the best choice, and the 75ml size is handy for travel. The Musk and Aloe Vera lotions contain fragrance and should not be used in ihram. Confirm the ruling with your own scholar and check the label.

Can men use perfume-free creams?

Yes. Many men prefer perfume-free creams because they do not clash with aftershave or cologne, and they are a good choice for skin that is irritated after shaving.
